100 Acts of Goodwill...
*Watch out for updates to this page!!!*

As part of the Centenary celebrations, we want to give something back to the communities in which we work. We aim to carry out 100 acts of goodwill, helping local organisations and individuals in their community activities.

The Company has helped out the following people in the following ways:

  1. Barn Owl Box for Cottingham Wildlife Watch Group

A request was received to assist the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust to install a Barn Owl box on the top of a telegraph pole. We decided this was something that we could easily help with and KC EYD engineering were delighted to help out. KC engineers took the time to install the barn owl box on an old KC telegraph pole at the Mill Beck Wildlife Area for the Cottingham (nr Hull) Wildlife Watch Group.

  2. Race for Life

100 runners from Kingston Communications are taking part in the Race for Life with the aim of raising £10,000 for Cancer Research UK.

  3. Alderman Cogan's CE Primary School, Hull - Karoo webspace

A request was received to increase KC employee Paul Kirlew's personal Karoo webspace to 100Mb so that he could continue to build Alderman Cogan's CE Primary School web site in his own time. KC willingly obliged. Paul had recently designed and built a web site for the school and updated it as often as the children needed, giving all his time freely. The increased web space will mean that he can now display a lot more of the children's work, including photos.

  4. Homeless & Rootless appeal

As part of our 100 Acts of Goodwill programme we ran a collection for the Hull Homeless & Rootless charity. Instead of providing a cash donation, Kingston Communications has decided to donate essential items.

The charity finds it expensive to provide blankets, sugar and coffee to the homeless and so these items are greatly wanted. They also require tinned puddings, such as rice pudding of tinned fruit as fresh produce cannot be donated in accordance with government guidelines.

A delivery of food was made to the project during August.

  5. Spring Cottage Primary School, Hull - help with reading

Allison Scrowston from our East Yorkshire business has always helped out in her own time with reading at her two daughters school - Spring Cottage Primary School - 2 days a week when she's not working in our Customer Care team. As part of the 100 Acts of Goodwill programme she requested that she spend a whole week there, helping out 32 children with their literacy skills. KC also donated £100 towards books that Allison and the children could read, as stocks were running low.

  6. Frederick Homes School, Hull - a talk on KC

Employee, Andy Hargraves offered to go into Frederick Homes school - a school catering for children with special needs - in his own time, and give a talk on KC. He went down to the school on10th June and gave a thoroughly enjoyable talk on how technology has changed over the years and what part KC have played. Andy is an 'old timer' on giving talks about KC, and often gives up his time to present to schools, brownie troops and other organisations across East Yorkshire.

  7. Aerobics at work

Jacqui Oliver is a qualified aerobics instructor and has volunteered her own time to get all her colleagues fit. More information on Jacqui's aerobics classes will be posted soon.

  8. Printing Posters for Hull KR

Graham Handforth works closely with the Junior Robins, a voluntary group who provide out of school activities for 0-16 year olds who support the Hull Kingston Rovers rugby league team. One area the group needed help was in printing colour posters and flyers to help promote up and coming activities. Graham asked if KC would be willing to help out under the 100 Acts of Goodwill programme. Of course we were!

  9. For every game played on KIT, KC donate 10p to charity

Vicky Taylor, who works in the KIT marketing team suggested that for every game played on KIT, KC could donate 10p to charity. Andrew Fawcett, marketing manager at KIT, thought this was a great idea and agreed to promote the idea. Money raised will go to KC's chosen 100 Acts of Goodwill charity - Children In Need.

  10. KC Staff donate children's clothers to Surestart

Katy Swaby, who works in the KC EYD marketing team, had heard about Surestart, an organisation who helps support families and single parents with young children aged between 0-5. As a parent herself she suggested that it would be nice idea if KC employees with young children themselves donated unwanted clean and good condition clothing to the charity - through the Acts of Goodwill programme. This idea was readily accepted and clothing will be collected by Katy to be passed on to the charity.

  11. KC promotional mugs to Salvation Army homeless shelter

Katy Swaby, who works in the KC EYD marketing team, came across some out-of-date KC promotional mugs in our marketing store. Having heard that the Salvation Army homeless Shelter can always make use of such everyday items she put her idea forward under the Acts of Goodwill programme. The Salvation Army took delivery of the mugs during July!

  12. Re-decorating the waiting room at Relate

Bill Failey suggested providing decorating equipment and man hours to help re-decorate the waiting room at Relate in Hull. Relate is a charitable trust that provides counselling to couples and teenagers. All the work at Relate is done voluntarily. KC have willingly pledged to provide the equipment.

  13. Football coaching at Stoneferry Primary School

John Wood is a school governor at Stoneferry Primary School. He's also a qualified FA junior team coach. He asked if it'd be possible to take some time off work to coach the kids. We thought this was a great idea, and asked John to get his line managers buy in. More information will follow.

  14. Reading scheme for children - Book Buddies

Lynne Mortimer, based in our Manchester office, suggested taking some time out of work to read to children. Her time will be donated to the Salford Business Education Partnership to read to children under a scheme called 'Book Buddies'. KC thought this was a great way of giving something back to the local community. Lynne will let us know how she got on.

  15. Treasure hunt around KC kiosks

A brilliant idea from Mike Lockwood who works for EYD . He suggested we hold a treasure hunt around the phone kiosks in Hull City Centre, where members of the public pay £1 to enter - all the money going to Children In Need, KC's chosen Centenary charity. We are looking at how we can incorporate this idea into our open day during November.

  16. Pantomime horse race

Children at Hessle High School are organising a charity pantomime horse race at Beverley Race Course on 21 September. All funds are being donated to Children in Need. KC is providing a costume and two volunteers to be the front and back end of "Casey" the company's entry into the race.

  17. Cups and Saucers to Age Concern

Following a change of logo a number of years ago, Kc had a stock of branded KC cups and saucers that were no longer needed but were in perfect condition. KC donated the cups and saucers to Age Concern for them to use in their resource centres in Hull.

  18. Wool collection for Caring Yorkshire Hands

Volunteers at this charity knit clothing for premature and very sick babies in special care baby units in Leeds and Hull. There are eighty dedicated knitters producing the clothing and they constantly need donations and materials to complete their work.

The company has appealed to employees to provide any spare wool they have so that we can pass on to the charity.

  19. Car park pass for disabled KC pensionner

An 89 year old, retired KC employee called for help. His season ticket for the KC Stadium included a car park pass which was too far for him to walk from. KC swapped one of their own car park passes, which was closer to the ground, to make sure he could continue to support his local football team.
