Wow – what a busy show this year’s AWS Summit was! With so much going on for delegates, it was great to see so many people taking time to visit the KCOM stand and showing a real interest in the value that cloud can deliver, as well as collecting some great swag!
We’ve supported this event for a good few years now and from the conversations we had, despite still being very diverse, the audience was definitely the most mature so far in terms of their cloud journeys and objectives. During the day we talked to people from organisations of all sizes - both public and private sector. These ranged from those looking for advice on the most appropriate cloud strategy, to people looking to take the next step in their career (and we’re always looking for great new talent by the way!).
Those less mature organisations have now finally moved beyond just considering cloud as an option, rather, they know it is the way to go and are thinking about which vendor, what are the initial priority activities and how best to execute these. For those who are more advanced on their journey, the focus seem to be around optimising their existing deployments, future proofing and more advanced security options in the light of recent high profile incidents.
There was a definite trend towards people looking for an experienced and trusted partner, someone to provide impartial, practical advice and reassurance about how they should take best advantage of the cloud.
Our observations though, are that many organisations are still looking at specific infrastructure or application-based challenges, rather than the bigger picture. In our view most enterprises should instead undertake a Cloud Adoption Programme, or build their own Cloud Centre of Excellence before tackling any of the larger cloudy challenges they may face… and of course our highly experienced team of AWS Consultants would be more than happy to help enterprises do just that!
For delegates there were no shortage of choices to fill their day ensuring it was a worthwhile event for everyone who attended. We hope you had the opportunity to sample some of the options in and around the main exhibition hall and conference areas including: the Innovation Hub, Start Up area, Ask an AWS Architect, the Certification Lounge, user groups and Re:Start training programme. We were pleased to be invited to take part in the Partner Theatre to deliver a lightning presentation of our view on the convergence of IoT and Cloud. Click here to view the presentation. I’d be happy to continue the debate around my personal definition of IoT if anyone would like?!
Within the conference sessions themselves there was a lot of excitement around AI and some of the new products and services from AWS. In the Keynote I particularly liked Dr. Werner Vogel’s encouragement to us all to think outside the box (or container) and move towards true Serverless Architecture using AWS Lambda and services such as API Gateway. Certainly some of our own projects are following exactly this path.
Of course, Serverless Architecture can also mean lots of loosely coupled moving parts - which is why AWS X-Ray is such a welcome addition to the ever-growing list of developer-friendly services that Amazon offer.
It truly was a diverse and exciting event, and it was heavily oversubscribed. For those of you who weren’t able to attend though, do not fear – you can view the keynote sessions here.
We’d be delighted to catch up with you to discuss your current cloud projects, wherever you’re up to, and see if we can help.
