Love, Simon
Based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Love, Simon is a sweet teen comedy drama film that was released last year. The movie centres on Simon Spier, a closeted gay high school student who is trying to find a balance between his friends, his family, and the blackmailer threatening to out his sexuality to the entire school.
Simultaneously, he’s desperately attempting to discover the identity of the anonymous classmate with whom he has fallen in love through a series of online interactions.
Ocean’s 8
Following on from the success of the all-female Ghostbusters reboot, this 2018 addition to the Ocean’s movie series features a stellar cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Rihanna and Cate Blanchett.
Bullock stars as Debbie Ocean, a criminal who has spent five years devising the biggest heist of her life. Together with her partner-in-crime, Lou Miller, she recruits a crew of specialists, including jeweller Amita, street hustler and pickpocket Constance, suburban mom Tammy, hacker Nine Ball, and fashion designer Rose, to help her pull off her ambitious stunt. Their target? A necklace that's worth more than $150 million.
The Handmaid’s Tale
This series is known for being quite an uncomfortable watch, but despite the heavy subject matter, it’s easy to get hooked.
Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, which rose in response to environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude.
The series focuses mostly on Offred, a handmaid with an unbreakable spirit, as she tries to navigate this new world without losing herself entirely.
Westworld
Based on the 1973 film of the same name, this TV series combines sci-fi and western elements to glorious effect.
Westworld isn't your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic attraction allows its visitors to live out their fantasies thanks to intelligent yet subservient androids. No matter how dark and twisted the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park's guests, allowing any wish to be indulged.
Featuring an exceptional cast that includes Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, both seasons of the show are now available to stream.
Modern Family
Told from the perspective of an unseen documentary filmmaker, this series offers an honest, often-hilarious perspective of family life. It was renewed for an eleventh and final season earlier this month and the latest is available to watch now on the streaming site, so if you’re looking for something lighthearted and funny to binge on, Modern Family might be just the ticket.
