Top picks for February

There’s always something exciting being added to the world’s favourite entertainment streaming service, so here are our top Netflix picks for February.

The Umbrella Academy

Based on the comic book series of the same name created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the first season of The Umbrella Academy is scheduled to premiere on Friday 15 February.

The plot revolves around seven children with various superpowers who were brought together by a billionaire industrialist after their curious births. Together, the children make up The Umbrella Academy: a dysfunctional superhero gang who have trained their whole lives to be the world’s saviours in the event of an apocalypse.

Get Out

One of the best film releases of 2017, Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out is finally coming to Netflix at the end of the month. Starring Daniel Kaluuya in the lead role, the plot follows the young black man as he uncovers a disturbing secret when he meets the unsettling extended family of his white girlfriend.

The film received an overwhelmingly positive response, with critics praising the screenplay, direction, acting and satirical themes.

Russian Doll

A new original series from Netflix itself, Russian Doll was created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland. The show follows a young woman named Nadia (played by Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honour at a seemingly inescapable party in New York City.

Channeling some dark Groundhog Day vibes, Nadia dies repeatedly while at this party, and the series revolves mainly around her trying to figure out what on earth is going on.

Velvet Buzzsaw

Velvet Buzzsaw is a 2019 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Dan Gilroy.

With a top-notch cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Collette and John Malkovich, the film follows the lives of several artists and critics as a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art after a series of paintings by an unknown artist is discovered.

Requiem Originally aired on the BBC last year, Requiem is a British television drama serial, written and created by Kris Mrksa and directed by Mahalia Belo.

It encompasses elements of both the supernatural and thriller genres, starring Lydia Wilson as Matilda Grey, an accomplished cellist whose life is turned upside down following her mother's suicide, which raises a number of questions about her identity and mysterious events in her past.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

If you’re after something a little more lighthearted than the options above, Netflix has got you covered. Disney’s cute family comedy focuses on Chloe, a pampered chihuahua from Beverly Hills, who gets an unwelcome taste of the real world when she gets lost in a tough part of Mexico.

With no Rodeo Drive boutiques in sight, she really is out of her element, until scrappy street dogs Delgado and Papi help her to find her way home.
