Selby’s Scouts will be able to add another badge to their list of achievements after being connected to ultrafast broadband.

The 6th Selby Brayton Group has joined forces with local provider KCOM to install free full fibre Lightstream broadband to their meeting hut, enabling them to get online when they’re not exploring the great outdoors as part of their activities.

This means the group will now be able take part in interactive workshops and skills sessions for its members to achieve their Digital Awareness and Digital Citizen badges.

Neil Bartholomew, Managing Director of KCOM Consumer, said the partnership would empower its young members to add even more strings to their bows alongside more traditional scouting pursuits.

He said: “The 6th Selby Brayton scouts are a great group that are very much at the heart of their local community, empowering young people to grow and fulfil their potential.

“As a local company we share those values and hope by providing this free connectivity to their HQ we can open up lots of new opportunities for them. We love creating digital inclusion and it’s great that this will make it easier for the young people who meet there to earn their Digital Citizen and Awareness badges.”

The KCOM team celebrated the new scouting partnership on Saturday (Nov 2) when they joined in a family fun day at the Brayton hut.

More than 200 youngsters, aged from four to 18, take part in the Brayton group every week across five sections - Squirrel Scouts, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, and Young Leaders – and regularly use the Hut which serves as the hub for all their activities.

Lloyd Labeautiere, Scout Leader for The 6th Selby Brayton Group, said: "As Scouts, we're preparing young people with skills for life and KCOM have really helped us to transform what we can now deliver.  The Scouts recently introduced Digital Activity badges, but as our HQ had no internet connection, and mobile connectivity was virtually non-existent.  So we're sincerely grateful for the opportunity KCOM have given to us and our community.

“The fibre broadband they have installed will allow scouts and guides a connection to the outside world.  We can now teach them how to stay safe online and think about potential risks.  Our young people go on to be pilots, nurses, doctors and business leaders to name a few and KCOM's support will open the doors to opportunity."

KCOM full fibre is now available across the Selby area offering seamless streaming and reliable ultrafast broadband using KCOM’s Power Streaming, Power Gaming and Power Shield technology. For more details visit  www.kcom.com
