Our top picks this December

It’s an especially good month for Amazon Prime content, so here are our top picks that will add a little variety alongside the usual Christmas movies.

Hereditary

Hailed as this generation’s answer to The Exorcist, Hereditary is a 2018 supernatural horror directed by Ari Aster that went on to gross over $79 million worldwide. Starring Toni Collette as an artist whose mother has recently passed, the film follows her and her family as they deal with the aftermath of the bereavement and the unsettling experiences that come with it.

If you missed this one in the cinema, it’s definitely worth streaming. However, it might be best to give it a miss if you’re not a huge fan of horror – there are some scenes in this that are sure to keep you up at night for a week or so.

4 Blocks

4 Blocks is a German drama series that premiered in May of last year. The show follows Ali "Toni“ Hamady, the leader of a crime family and drug cartel in Berlin-Neukölln, as he is forced to postpone his plans to leave the business to live an ordinary life with his wife after his brother-in-law is arrested.

The first series of 4 Blocks received critical acclaim in Germany and has won multiple domestic awards, which speaks volumes for how compelling it is.

A Clockwork Orange

You can never go wrong with an old classic, and Amazon seem to agree. Based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name, A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film that was adapted, produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Becoming something of a cult classic, it uses disturbing and violent imagery to comment on issues such as psychiatry, juvenile delinquency and youth gangs.

The film focuses on Alex DeLarge, a charismatic delinquent who enjoys listening to classical music and committing serious violence. The plot follows Alex as he and his gang of thugs – or droogs, as he calls them – go on a horrific crime spree, which eventually leads to his capture and attempted rehabilitation.

Iron Man 2

If you’re still in mourning over Infinity War and longing for simpler days with your favourite superheroes, Amazon has your back.

Iron Man 2, the sequel to 2008's Iron Man, hits the streaming service this month. Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Justin Theroux, the film follows the legendary Tony Stark six months after the events of Iron Man, as he resists calls from the United States government to hand over his groundbreaking technology whilst also dealing with his declining health from the arc reactor in his chest.

Like every good Marvel movie, there’s a classic villain in the form of rogue Russian scientist Ivan Vanko, who has found a way to develop the same technology and built weapons of his own in order to take down the Stark empire.
