Our top Amazon Prime picks

Fetch the popcorn! We’ve rounded up ten brilliant shows on Amazon Prime that you can’t miss out on.

  1. Room

Starring Brie Larson, who bagged an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in this film, Room follows the harrowing story of a young mother who is locked underground by a sexual predator for seven years. Incredibly, she manages to bring up a son and educates him as best she can. The film witnesses the pair escape and the five-year-old experience the strange and frightening outside world for the first time.

  1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

A quirky classic, this Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey rom-com explores the nature of romance, science and memories. With iconic scenes from a fiery-haired Winslet, the movie sees the pair try to erase each other from their memories, yet they still find themselves magnetically drawn together.

  1. The Hurt Locker

After winning six Academy Awards in 2009, this thrilling war film is a must-see on Amazon Prime. Highlighting the psychological reactions to the stress of combat, The Hurt Locker focuses on an Iraq War Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team that is targeted by insurgents.

  1. Moonlight

A coming-of-age drama, Moonlight narrates the life of a young American man in three distinct stages: youth, adolescence and early adulthood. The winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2017, this stunning film delves into themes such as sexuality, identity and physical and emotional abuse.

  1. Interstellar

This mind-bending flick is a top choice when you’re in the mood for something truly thought-provoking. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the story is set in a dystopian future where humans are searching for an alternative home through a newly discovered wormhole. Certainly not your typical sci-fi movie, Interstellar combines the laws of physics with class entertainment.

  1. Seinfeld

If you’ve not seen Seinfeld before, definitely add it to your Amazon watchlist today. The American sitcom is centred around an apartment in Manhattan’s Upper West Side and documents the trifles of everyday life. This has given it an affectionate reputation as “the show about nothing”.

  1. Ripper Street

Like many others, we were devastated when the BBC axed this period crime drama based on the activities in the murderous Whitechapel area. However, Amazon has picked up where the Beeb left off, with the fifth and final series now available to enjoy.

  1. The Night Manager

Another British TV hit, The Night Manager stars Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman. Inspired by the 1993 novel by John le Carré, the six-part series observes a luxury hotel night manager and a former soldier as they are recruited by an intelligence operative.

  1. The Man in the High Castle

A fascinating tale focussing on a terrifying possible history, The Man in the High Castle plays out what could have happened in the USA if Germany had won the Second World War. Based on the alternative history novel by Philip K. Dick, the gripping two-season show is a must-watch.

  1. Masters of Sex

In the 1950s and 1960s, William Masters and Virginia Johnson were pioneers in the topic of sex. This sensual drama loosely derives from their research and work at Washington University. Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan bring the two erotic scientists to life.
