Ringo the miniature phone box is proving a big hit online.
It may be more used to charting the latest trends in the UK’s music scene, but the NME has leapt to the defence of Hull this week.
The famed music publication has listed all the things it loves about Hull after Oasis main man Noel Gallagher said some rather rude things about the city while on tour in the US.
And number five on the list of all things great about Hull, according to the NME, nestled between chip spice at six and “awesome new bands” at four was KCOM’s own cream coloured phone boxes.
The NME, which recently announced it was scrapping its printed version and would be purely online, said: “It’s probably been a while since you were even aware of your nearest telephone box, let alone entered one.
“But in Hull, you’d want to use them all the time for the sheer novelty value. Unlike the traditional red, Hull has cream telephone boxes in a nod to their independent, municipal telephone network provider, KCOM. Who cares why, though? Just enjoy their chic, retro glory.”
The cream K6 telephone boxes praised by the NME were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of George V.
Gallagher, best known for hits such as Don’t Look Back In Anger and Wonderwall, unleashed the fruity, tongue-in-cheek remarks about Hull during a gig in Austin, Texas, when a stag party which was part of the audience started chanting about the city.
Among the Britpop legend’s initial thoughts to the party was that the only good thing to come out of Hull was the Humber Bridge and they must have robbed their gran’s house to afford the tickets to the US.
Support for Hull has also emerged from another unlikely source in the aftermath of Noel Gallagher’s comments.
Never one to miss an opportunity to goad his big brother, Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has also weighed into the controversy saying he “loved Hull” and is now considering an offer to launch the new Hull Venue.
The 3,500 capacity concert venue is due to open later this year. Already lined up to perform at the venue are The League of Gentlemen, The Strictly Come Dancing professionals and comedians Jasper Carrott and Alistair McGowan.
