The three latest charities to be awarded a KCOM Community Grant have been announced

The winning groups were voted for by the public from a shortlist of six and will now receive money to help them continue their invaluable work in Hull and East Yorkshire.

Football Club Esperanza, Hull Visual Choir and Mires Beck Nursery will each receive up to £1,000

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We’re delighted to reveal the three very worthy winners of our latest round of community grants.

“Once again the scheme has proved incredibly popular with a record number of 1,700 votes cast for the shortlisted finalists.

“Our winners do a great job improving life for people in Hull and East Yorkshire and we look forward to seeing them use the grants to help continue their incredible work.

“The next round of grants will be open for applications from Monday, 7 October, so if you just missed out this time we’d love to hear from you again – and hopefully we can help as many great local groups as possible.”

Hull’s Football Club Esperanza was awarded a £1,000 grant to buy new goal posts and new FA training course for its ever-expanding teams.

Esperanza’s Nicola Johnson, said: “Football Club Esperanza are thoroughly delighted to be awarded the community grant from KCOM. We would like to thank all of the amazing people who took their time to support us and place their votes to ensure we were successful in securing the grant.

“Thank you so much to KCOM for giving us the opportunity, this will make a huge difference to our club. We can now purchase the essential steel frame goals just in time for the start of the new footballing season.”

Hull Visual Choir, which is a choir made up of people with hearing difficulties, will use its £850 grant to travel to and take part in the Jersey Eisteddfod Signing Choir Competition.

Sarah Regan, Hull Deaf Centre manager and choir lead, thanked everyone who took the time to vote for her group.

She said: “On behalf of the Hull Visual Choir I would like to give a big thank you to everyone who voted for us and to KCOM for giving us this grant.

“We will use this money to hire a coach to take us all to and collect us from Liverpool airport for the Jersey Eisteddfod in November. The choir fundraises and works hard all year to raise enough funds to travel and perform, not only because they love how performing makes them feel, but, more importantly, for how it makes the audience feel.

“Sign song is beautiful and empowering and every signed song performed by a BSL user helps to bring the hearing and the Deaf communities a little closer together, and that is priceless.

Mires Beck Nursery will use its £1,000 grant to help buy a specially-adapted wheelchair to give people with disabilities better access to the local countryside.

Karen Hall, Mires Beck general manager, said: “It’s always wonderful when a business wins anything, but to win something for the people we serve is an added bonus.

“It is equally special that our friends, supporters and community have voted for our aim to supply a new all-terrain wheelchair which will bring more vulnerable adults in touch with nature on our lovely rural site.

“We will put this gratefully received contribution toward purchasing this for the autumn activities.”
