What to watch at this year’s Hull Film Festival
The popular Hull Film Festival is back this week, celebrating its fifth annual edition with a fantastic lineup of the very best in new movies from around the world.
Now in its 7th year, the Yorkshire Wolds Walking and Outdoors Festival has grown in reputation, showcasing the wonderful landscape and celebrating the rich heritage of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Focusing on the vibrant heritage and stunning landscape of the Wolds, the much-loved festival promises an impressive array of outdoor activities, including heritage tours, photography hikes, health walks, treasure trails, seabird cruises and cycling routes.
And there’s something for everyone too. The festival features over 100 different walks and events that will appeal to all ages, abilities and interests.
“The Yorkshire Wolds Walking and Outdoors Festival is becoming more and more popular each year,” explains Richard Burton, Councillor and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Tourism at East Yorkshire Council. “It provides an excellent opportunity to discover our region’s picturesque landscapes and all that the area has to offer.”
Some of the highlights include The Beverley Ghost Walk, a Nordic Walking tour across the Westwood, and The Pilgrimage of Grace circular walk.
“Most of the walks are completely free to join,” Hayley Topley, Tourism Marketing Officer at East Riding of Yorkshire Council tells us. “There are a couple that you have to pay for but these are usually the longer distance ones that include an additional activity. For example, our Boots and Beer one involves a trip to Wold Top Brewery.”
“Walking is a great way to improve health and wellbeing,” Burton adds. “We are blessed in the East Riding to have so many wonderful locations to explore and such a wide variety of destinations to visit on foot.”
For 2017, the organisers have adapted a walk especially for people with impaired mobility. During the tour, you will be able to catch a glimpse of some of the market town’s oldest streets. The route is specially designed to be fully accessible to those using a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
“There are shorter, easier walks for people who are new to walking. Often, we find that people join in with these and then come back the year after wanting to try some of the more advanced routes,” Hayley points out.
Outside of Beverley, there are a number of fascinating walks to embark on. These include the Burnby Hall and Gardens and Heritage Canal Walk. Beautiful wildlife can be spotted on the lock and you can discover more about the Hall’s rich history.
“I think a lot of people do it as a social event, they like to get outside, meet new people and catch up with friends,” Hayley suggests.
The Yorkshire Wolds Walking and Outdoors Festival takes place from Saturday 9 to Sunday 17 September. You can find out more on the Visit Hull and East Yorkshire website or download the full programme.
