Cultural events in Hull this May
As we make our way into summer, Hull is still the best place to be when it comes to unbeatable entertainment. We've rounded up our top five things to do in the city this month.
Though the summer holidays are swiftly coming to an end, the city is still brimming with a variety of events to attend this September. Here are some of our top picks.
Freedom Festival
A popular family event for many years, the Freedom Festival is back and more exciting than ever. Spread across three days, the celebrations bring together some of the best talents, both local and from around the world, to put on a weekend full of street theatre, live music, interesting talks and quirky pop-ups.
There are performances scheduled from local icons such as Middle Child, Bud Sugar and Chiedu Oraka, as well as international performers like Jungle Brothers and DULCE DUCA. Though many events are ticketed, there are a ton of free ones to take part in as well, meaning you don’t have to break the bank for a fun day out.
Freedom Festival takes place from Friday 31st August to Saturday 2nd September in various locations across the city.
Long Live the Kings of Hull
This is the hilarious sequel to last year’s The Kings of Hull. Created by local legend John Godber, this side-splitting show is currently in its rehearsal stage (pictured).
Join Malc and his family on a P&O Ferries Dutch Dash, as they discover that it’s not only the sea that gets rough. It could be Rotterdam or anywhere, but when you take the Kings out of Hull, the sparks still fly. Who said that family time can’t be as crazy as a holiday with friends?
Catch Long Live the Kings of Hull at Hull New Theatre from Wednesday 5th to Saturday 15th September.
Abigail’s Party
Welcome to suburban Britain in 1977. Beverly and Laurence have invited their neighbours Angela and Tony, and Sue, round to their house for a party.
Except it’s not really a party, it’s drinks, nibbles and snobby comments as Beverly tries to be a model of middle class behaviour and taste. Whilst the cheese and pineapple sticks are circulated and awkward pauses are filled with sneaky cigarettes, the real party is happening back at Sue’s house, where her teenage daughter Abigail and her mates are having the time of their lives. As the teenagers’ punky reggae party filters in from outside, the cracks begin to show back at Beverly’s.
Mike Leigh's comedy masterpiece has been a hit on both stage and television. Directed by Change Maker Amanda Huxtable, this new production looks at what can happen when we forget to be true to ourselves.
Don’t miss out on this new take on an old classic, running at Hull Truck Theatre from Thursday 27th September to Saturday 20th October.
BBC Contains Strong Language 2018
Contains Strong Language is back with more punch than ever! The UK’s biggest poetry and performance festival of new writing returns to Hull this September, bringing more than 30 events to the city over three days.
Leading poets and world-class spoken word artists will take to the stage alongside brand new voices, delivering unique and moving performances.
Contains Strong Language is taking place in various locations across the city from Friday 28th to Saturday 30th September.
