Cultural events in Hull this May
As we make our way into summer, Hull is still the best place to be when it comes to unbeatable entertainment. We've rounded up our top five things to do in the city this month.
The nights may be getting darker, but that doesn’t mean they’re getting duller when it comes to exciting events taking place across the city.
Here’s a roundup of some of the best cultural offerings taking place in Hull over the next few weeks.
Dark Winter
An ex-trawlerman from East Hull. An adopted teenager from Hessle. An arsonist from Orchard Park. All unknown to one another. All apparently unconnected victims of brutal murders. But Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy reckons there’s a link. Trouble is, when you blow the whistle on your boss, however corrupt, no one listens to a grass.
Set in Hull and based on the thrilling crime novel by bestselling author David Mark, Ensemble 52 brings Aector McAvoy's first case back to the stage in a stunning adaptation by award-winning writers Richard Vergette and Nick Lane, directed by Andrew Pearson.

Hull Jazz Festival
The winter edition of the popular Hull Jazz Festival is back in full swing this month, taking place across the city in fantastic venues that include Hull City Hall, Hull Truck Theatre and the Albemarle Music Centre.
With a lineup that includes jazz icons like Dame Evelyn Glennie MBE, Jean Toussaint and Juliet Kelly, it’s bound to be a weekend full of outstanding music and toe-tapping fun.
Hull Jazz Festival events take place from Wednesday 14 to Saturday 17 November.
Calendar Girls The Musical
Calendar Girls The Musical by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth is the award-winning production based on the true story of the calendar girls – a group of ordinary ladies who achieved something extraordinary. This marvellous musical comedy received fantastic five-star reviews in London's West End and is now on its way to Hull.
The cast for the show is stellar, starring Fern Britton, Anna-Jane Casey, Sara Crowe, Karen Dunbar, Ruth Madoc, Rebecca Storm and Denise Welch.

George Ezra
He won everyone over this summer with his hit single Shotgun, and now George Ezra is making his Hull debut.
The singer-songwriter’s debut album Wanted on Voyage is certified 4x platinum in the UK, gold in the US, and was amongst the top 10 biggest selling artist albums in this country in both 2014 and 2015, reaching number 1 in the Official UK Chart and spending 122 weeks in the chart overall.
George Ezra will be playing at the recently opened Bonus Arena on Saturday 10 November.
Circus of Horrors Psycho Asylum
Halloween will have been and gone by this point, but there are still plenty of opportunities to get spooky, especially with this new offering from the spinetingling Circus of Horrors.
This jaw-dropping spectacular features an amazing amalgamation of bizarre and fantastic circus acts, all woven into a sensational shock-horror story and the darkest of magic – taking the show to a whole new level.
