Two of Hull’s best-known businesses are joining forces for tasty partnership and give hope to the high street

Herby’s, Hull’s famous family-run delicatessen which has been providing sandwiches and lunchtime treats in the city for 35 years, is set to open its new premises at KCOM’s Carr Lane HQ this month. (March 2019)

Herby’s owners Alison Denby and Michelle Hodgson say they’re looking forward to starting a new chapter in the business’s history – thanks to KCOM.

Sisters Alison and Michelle, whose father opened the first Herby’s shop in Newland Avenue in 1984, said work is now gathering pace to open the new Carr Lane shop in early April.

Michelle Hodgson, who started working at Herby’s aged 14 doing the washing up, said: “We’re really excited about moving on to our new adventure in a new, bigger premises, just down the road on Carr Lane.

“It’s great that we’re working with KCOM to create a brand-new shop. It’s brilliant when two well-known and long-established Hull businesses can come together and support each other like this.

“We’ll be continuing doing all the popular home-cooked favourites that we already do – but also introducing some new ideas and twists too to give the people of Hull something a little different.”

Herby’s is well-known among Hull’s lunchtime wanderers as the place to pick up a tasty treat or two – ranging from its fresh deli paninis, sandwiches and pork pies to healthy salads, filling jacket potatoes and mouth-wateringly indulgent sweets.

Alison said: “The new premises is like a blank canvas, so we’re really looking forward to putting our stamp on it and making it somewhere special to visit.

“It’s shaping up really nicely inside and when the signage and new front goes up I think it will look really special. We’ll have a lot more kitchen space at the new shop so we’ll have more room to create a really special menu. We can’t wait to get started.”

Sean Royce, KCOM’s managing director, said he was delighted to be welcoming Herby’s to Carr Lane.

He said: “It’s great that we have been able to help Herby’s find new, affordable premises right here in Carr Lane. It’s well-known that these are challenging times for the High Street but as a company that’s been at the heart of Hull for more than a hundred years we’re determined to do whatever we can to help small local businesses in the city centre to succeed.”

Herby’s can be found between Primark and KCOM and is due to open in early April. For more details visit www.herbys.co.uk.
