Famous Hull sandwich shop launches new Carr Lane business
Hull’s most famous sandwich shop has started a new era in its new city centre location.
Herby’s, which has been providing hungry Hullensians with lunchtime treats for 35 years, today opened its new shop on Carr Lane, in part of KCOM’s Telephone House headquarters.
Herbert Burr, the original Herby who opened the first Herby’s shop on Newland Ave in 1984, cut the ribbon to officially open the swish new shop.
He said: “I’m really delighted to be here opening a new Herby’s and starting a new chapter in our history.
“The shop looks great, it’s light and airy and looks really smart. I’m really proud of my daughters Alison and Michelle, who now run the shop. They’ve done a great job in pulling this all together.
“It’s a great new era for us in a new location. This will be the seventh Herby’s shop we’ve had down the years. We’ll be selling the same quality home-made food that we’re know for – most of which is baked here on the premises.”
Paul Spence, CEO of charity Paul For Brain Recovery, was one of the local celebs who attended the opening.
Paul, who has a KCOM van named after him in recognition of his work for charity, said: “It’s great to be here today.
“Our team members from Paul for Brain Recovery come to Herby’s every day and they keep us well-nourished with their salads and sandwiches.
“Herby’s have always been really supportive of us – they have our collection tubs in the shop and they always attend our fund-raising balls every year.
“I’m really chuffed for them that they’ve got a great new shop. They’re a great family business selling great quality food. They’re exactly what the high street needs. I wish them every success.”
Former Hull KR player Gary Clark was also on hand to see the shop open. Gary cut the ribbon on the original Newland Avenue Herby’s 35 years ago.
He said: “I can’t believe it’s 35 years ago. When I saw the sign saying ‘established 1984’ it suddenly made me feel really old!
“But it’s great to be here, 35 years on, seeing Herby’s going from strength to strength and starting a new shop in a new location. Here’s to another 35 years.”
