Hull reveals its favourite festive song and movie

The votes are in and the elves have finished counting – and we can now reveal Hull’s favourite Christmas movie and song.

Last month, KCOM launched a competition to find the city’s favourite festive-themed film and chart topper and the people of Hull responded in their hundreds.

And the tinsel-trimmed results show Wham!’s Last Christmas has been pipped to the top spot by The Pogues’ classic track Fairytale of New York.

Coming in at number three is All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey with Driving Home For Christmas by Chris Rea and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard rounding out the top five.

When it comes to a Yuletide big screen entertainment, Hull’s favourite top five included – drum roll – Santa Claus the Movie, Miracle of 34^th Street, Diehard (yes, it is a Christmas movie – we checked) and Home Alone.

But claiming the crown as Hull’s favourite Christmas movie is Elf – a relative newcomer in the seasonal stakes starring Will Ferrell as an oversized Santa’s helper.

Claiming the prizes for taking part in the competition were Vicky Harding, who will now be able to listen to her favourite Christmas tunes on a six-month Spotify subscription and a pair of Beats Solo 3 wireless earphones.

And taking home a 43ins Toshiba 4k Ultra HD Smart TV - just in time to watch her favourite Christmas film, Miracle on 34^th Street, is Marie Ellington-Runkee.

Marie, who also receives a £50 Netflix voucher, said: “I’m delighted to have won. My favourite film is Miracle on 34th Street because it reminds me of watching it with the family as a little girl and feeling all Christmassy.

“Winning this is perfect timing just before Christmas. We’re looking forward to watching all the Christmas TV and films on it.”

The search was part of KCOM’s launch of its new Hulltrafast campaign to show how easy it is to stream seasonal songs and movies over its ultrafast Lightstream broadband.
