Engineering work to connect dozens of homes to full fibre network is now underway

KCOM has begun work to connect another East Riding community to its award-winning full fibre broadband network.

Engineering work to connect dozens of homes to KCOM’s full fibre network in North Newbald, near Market Weighton, is now underway after local residents, who felt they were missing out on ultrafast broadband speeds, appealed to the company to extend its network to the leafy village.

KCOM’s chief executive officer, Dale Raneberg, said: “We’re delighted to have started work to bring all the benefits of full fibre broadband to North Newbald and I would like to thank everyone from the local community who worked with us to make this happen.

“We brought the installation work forward because we saw how enthusiastic local residents were for full fibre broadband and how desperately they needed it, especially during these days when so many people are working from home.

“I know many of the villagers who called on KCOM to bring our full fibre network to North Newbald have struggled on low speeds and unreliable connections for a long time, but now hopefully our ultrafast Lightstream broadband will transform the way they are able to both work and relax online.

“We’re always listening to local communities’ needs and willing to adapt our rollout plans to make sure those who want to be connected to one of the UK’s fastest and most reliable broadband networks can be as soon as possible.”

The work will take two weeks to complete before local residents are able to connect to KCOM’s full fibre network.

Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, who has campaigned for rural communities across East Yorkshire to have access to high quality broadband services, welcomed KCOM’s arrival in North Newbald.

He said: “I’m delighted to visit North Newbald to see KCOM’s work underway to connect most of the remaining properties in the village. The parish clerk, Suzanne Smith, has been tireless in her efforts to press KCOM on this and it’s great news that the company has listened and is now here doing the work.

“As a KCOM Lightstream customer myself I know what a difference it’s going to make to people’s lives having the ability to connect to the internet with lightning speed. I was determined to support the Parish Council’s efforts to see these roads upgraded to fibre and I’m really pleased for the village that those efforts have paid off. There are still a few outlying properties with slow broadband in the area that I will be happy to work with KCOM to connect to full fibre.”.”

The North Newbald rollout comes as KCOM is investing £100m to expand its full fibre network beyond its traditional heartlands.

So far, the Hull-based company has reached Driffield, Market Weighton, Nafferton and Howden and will also soon be providing Lightstream broadband to Pocklington, Hornsea, Goole and Withernsea with more towns and villages in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire to be named shortly.

Lightstream was named the UK’s Best Consumer Broadband service at the 2019 Internet Service Provider Association (ISPA) Awards in 2019 and has been shortlisted for the award for the second year running in 2020.
