KCOM collection gives helping hand to man’s best friend

A collection by animal loving KCOM employees has helped a Hull dog rescue centre.

Food, toys and doggy treats were all among the items donated by KCOM staff to help care for the dogs at Oakwood Dog Rescue in east Hull.

The charity, which rescues and rehabilitates dogs from across the UK and abroad, received several baskets of supplies that will help the centre’s canine guests while they look for a home.

Addie Marshall, Oakwood’s fundraising supervisor, said: “It’s great that the people at KCOM have chosen us as one of their charities to support in 2018.

“We are always grateful for donations – both money and supplies – to help us look after the dogs here.

“It is really expensive paying for bills, food, vets’ bills and staff to look after the dogs so any help is always appreciated. It helps us to give our dogs, who often haven’t had the best starts, better lives.”

The treats are especially helpful, says Addie, to help train dogs such as Star, pictured above, who is one of the centre’s long term residents. Once they are trained and acclimatised to their new lives off the streets to they are much easier to rehome.

Alex O'Mahony from KCOM with Oakwood's fundraising supervisor Addie Marshall and dog Hector, who has now been rehomed.

Many of the dogs who have been rehomed by Oakwood have gone on to be treasured family pets with one, Ted the Tollie – a cross between a terrier and a collie, starring on his own online Instagram account.

Addie, said: “We do keep in touch with a lot of the dogs that we have rehomed. It’s extremely rewarding when you see them transformed from these scared little things when they first come in to these confident happy family pets.”

Oakwood Dog Rescue is one of three charities selected by KCOM employee panel to support in 2018.

Other charities who will be benefitting this year include Musical Theatre Kids and Abbie’s Fund.

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We’re delighted to be able to help Oakwood Dog Rescue to continue the work they do looking after and finding new homes for stray and abandoned dogs.

“The collection proved a hugely popular one in our Carr Lane and Salvesen Way offices showing we have some real animal lovers among our KCOM team.”
