KCOM donation helps Oakwood underdogs

2

The canine residents of Oakwood Dog Rescue centre have had a helping paw to keep warm his winter

The charity, which rescues and rehomes stray dogs, has received a cheque for £1,000 from KCOM employees after they chose the east Hull centre as one of their three charities of the year.

Addie Marshall, Oakwood fundraising supervisor, said: “It’s a huge help – especially at this time of year when it’s so cold outside. The money will be used to pay the heating bills to keep our dogs warm and also for some new doors for the kennels, as the old ones are really in need of replacing.

“I’m delighted to be picked as one of KCOM’s charities of the year and really appreciate the support they’ve given us.”

Oakwood is currently looking after 27 dogs, although Addie is hoping to find homes for many of them in the weeks ahead.

“It would be really nice to find a home for little Stella, a Romanian crossbreed who’s really struggled to get used to life in kennels,” said Addie. “And for Bobita (Bob), a ten-year-old crossbreed, whose looking for his one last forever retirement home with a loving family.”

KCOM volunteers took part in a range of activities since last April to raise the money, including raffles, bingo games and sponsored bike rides and the fundraising activities will continue throughout 2019.

The two other charities which will benefit from KCOM’s fund raising activities this year are Musical Theatre Kids and Abbie’s Fund.

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “Oakwood Dog Rescue does a great job looking after some of our less fortunate furry friends and we’re delighted that this first donation will go towards making the dogs’ lives a little more comfortable.

“We’ll be continuing to raise money for our three chosen charities all year so hopefully we’ll have many more events to take part in and many more good news stories to tell.”

Other dogs currently looking for a home include:

Mavis is a small two-year old crossbreed from Romania who loves walks and attention.

Ellie is currently looking for a foster home.

Star is a big friendly girl who has spent a long time at Oakwood and is looking for a forever home.

Sadie is our cover star for this story – she is a medium sized crossbreed who is very friendly.
