KCOM launches competition for kids to design Colour Pages cover

Could your child be our new cover star artist?

Does your child have artistic flair and a talent for creating eye-catching images?

If so, a new competition from KCOM could be a perfect way to put their creativity into every home across Hull and East Yorkshire.

The Hull-based communications provider is launching a competition for one lucky youngster to have their artwork take pride of place on the cover of the Colour Pages.

More than 200,000 copies of the classified business and services directory are distributed across Hull and East Yorkshire each year – from Hedon to Hull and Dunswell to Driffield – meaning the winner will have their artwork seen across the whole region.

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We’re delighted to launch this competition that will showcase the work of one talented youngster in Hull and East Yorkshire.

“Even in these days of Google, the Colour Pages is a hugely popular publication in our region which is seen and used by thousands of people every day to find local tradesman and services.

“We’d love youngsters across Hull and East Yorkshire to take part in our competition and to dazzle us with their creations and imagination. Children can take part in the competition through their school or draw something inspiring at home and send it to us independently – and we can’t wait to see what they will come up with.

“KCOM has been at the heart of Hull since 1904 and we’re busy working in the community every day to make this region a better place to live and work. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate that than by asking the community to design the cover for our 65th annual Colour Pages.”

Children at Springhead Primary School, in Anlaby, were among the first to get involved in the competition during a visit from KCOM delivering its Simnet community outreach activity.

Teacher Jess Young said: “The children at Springhead Primary School are really excited to be asked to take part in the KCOM Colour Pages competition. It's a great opportunity to get children involved in local area events.”

Those taking part in the competition are being asked to create a cover picture on the theme of “Hull: The most connected city in the world” to tie in with the completion of KCOM’s rollout of Lightstream broadband.

When the rollout is complete in March 2019 – reaching 200,000 properties – it will make Hull the most connected city in the world for full fibre broadband.

Brendon, said: “We want the entries to be as bright, colourful and exciting as possible to represent all that is happening in Hull right now.”

The competition is open to children aged 11 and under.

As well as having their work featured where thousands of people will be able to see it, the lucky winner will also receive a Samsung Galaxy Tablet while two runners up will each receive £25 in vouchers.

Competition entries will be judged by a panel of KCOM employees and the closing date for entries is Sunday, 31 March.
