Keldmarsh Primary pupils take on KCOM ‘Key Skills’ Programme

Learning about the history of telecommunications, fake news, communication skills and internet safety was all in a day’s work for Year 5 pupils from Keldmarsh Primary School who took part in the brand new KCOM ‘Key Skills’ programme.

The programme, which is delivered by volunteers from KCOM, provides pupils with an innovative educational experience combined with a lot of fun.

Heidi Tibbetts, Year 6 teacher at Keldmarsh Primary, said: “Each module had a clear direction and objective that fitted into the overall outcomes of the whole day. The introduction videos for the modules were a really nice touch too as they made it clear to the children where the session was heading. 

“The activities were brilliant. There was so much for the children to do and they weren't just sat listening all day. They were really engaging activities and the children really enjoyed all of them. There was also a great mixture of skills being used including art, writing, reading, maths and problem solving.”

Brendon Smurthwaite, Community Coordinator at KCOM, added: “This was the first time we’ve run our brand-new programme and it was very rewarding, both for the children and the volunteers involved. All of the subjects the programme covers are relevant to Key Stage Two pupils and the children were receptive to the tasks that were set for them.

“Their enthusiasm across the day was great to see and hopefully they learned a lot whilst having fun at the same time.”
