Yes Minister, Hull will reach broadband milestone
A Government minister has praised KCOM as it reveals it will reach its target of making ultrafast broadband available to 150,000 properties by the end of the year.
Thousands of homes across Bransholme are being connected to ultrafast broadband as KCOM closes in on its target of making its Lightstream service available across its Hull and East Yorkshire network.
Lightstream will be available to nearly 2,700 more Bransholme properties by the end of October as the IT and communications provider connects the final corners of its network to its full fibre service.
KCOM chief marketing officer Cathy Phillips, said: “I’m delighted we’re now bringing Lightstream to thousands of homes in Bransholme as we near the end of our journey to give Hull and East Yorkshire the truly world-class full fibre broadband network it deserves.
“We are now in the final phase of our six-year programme to connect Hull and East Yorkshire to one of the fastest broadband networks in Europe and this is already bringing huge benefits to homes and businesses across the region.
“I know parts of Bransholme have waited longer than other areas for the arrival of Lightstream and I would like to thank all our customers there for their patience and understanding.
“It is a huge undertaking – both engineering and financially – to deploy full fibre across our whole network but I can promise that it will be worth the wait with faster and more reliable broadband than anywhere else in the UK.”
Lightstream will reach a further 3,500 Bransholme homes in December while the area will be completed by February 2019 when a final 3,500 properties will be reached – totalling 9,500 homes in the area.
Other areas where KCOM engineers will soon be installing Lightstream include the Boulevard area of the city where 3,300 properties will be connected in November and Orchard Park where 800 homes will be connected by the end of the year.
With KCOM connecting a new customer to the service every 20 minutes, Lightstream enables households to enjoy download speeds of 400Mbps (megabits per second) while businesses can connect at one Gigabit per second. The technology KCOM has deployed will enable even faster speeds to be delivered in the future.
