Her colourful picture was picked from hundreds of entries
Eleven-year-old Milly Northey has visited the iconic landmark that inspired her painting which will now be seen by every home in Hull.
Milly, who is a Year Six pupil at Newland St John’s CE Academy, painted her stirring picture of Hull visitor attraction The Deep as part of a competition to design the cover of KCOM’s Colour Pages phone directory.
Her colourful picture was picked from hundreds of entries and will now feature on the front of the UK’s oldest trades and services directory.
The Colour Pages, which this year celebrates its 65th anniversary, is now ready to be delivered and will soon be seen by 200,000 properties across Hull and East Yorkshire.
Taking a sneak peek at the new directory outside the real Deep, Milly said she was “proud” to have her work showcased to the whole city.
“I think it’s really good,” she said.
“To see my picture on the finished book is pretty cool. I was inspired to draw The Deep because I really like the building and the fact it’s by the water. I did use a ruler for some parts but most of it is freehand.”
As part of her prize Milly also received a Samsung Galaxy Tab and a guest pass courtesy of The Deep.
“I have been to the Deep before and it’s very good,” said Milly. “My favourite bit is the penguins. I’d like to see them again.”
Becky Leach, The Deep’s marketing and communications manager, said she was delighted Milly chose The Deep as her inspiration.
She said: “It’s a fantastic, creative picture and we’re delighted Milly chose to draw The Deep.
“Our iconic building has been used as a backdrop for many artists over the years and it’s great to see local young people engaging with our city’s architecture.
“It’s great that everyone will be getting a copy of Milly’s artwork through their front door.”
More than 200,000 copies of the classified business and services directory will be distributed across Hull and East Yorkshire – from Hedon to Hull and Dunswell to Driffield – next month.
