What is Lightstream?

You may have heard about KCOM’s ground-breaking broadband service and the benefits it can bring – but what actually is Lightstream and how does it work? 

Basically, Lightstream is a faster more reliable way to access the internet that uses high tech fibre optic cables instead of old copper wires. 

Rather than sending electrical messages down copper cables, fibre transfers information using pulses of light – lots of them. 

In fact, the laser that fires light down each fibre does so at a rate of 2.5 billion pulses - that’s 2,500,000,000 - every second.

Lightstream uses Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) technology which means that we provide those ultrafast signals right to your doorstep. Our internet doesn’t stop at a street cabinet down the road and limp the rest of the way on copper wires like many other broadband providers’ services do.

We’re making Lightstream available to 3,000 properties to Lightstream every month throughout 2018 and connecting someone new every 20 minutes so if it isn’t in your street already it will be very soon.

We’ll have connected all of our network by March 2019, that’s more than 200,000 properties, making Hull and East Yorkshire one of the fastest regions on the planet.
