What to watch on Amazon Prime (1)

2

Amazon’s list of new movies and TV shows hitting your screens this month is a bit shorter than usual. However, what it lacks in quantity, it more than makes up for in quality. Grab the remote and get watching!

Gringo

2018 American crime comedy Gringo boasts a stellar cast that includes David Oyelowo, Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried, Thandie Newton and Sharlto Copley.

The film follows a mild-mannered businessman who is sent to Mexico to deliver an experimental marijuana pill, but when he’s kidnapped by a drug cartel he must escape alongside a hired mercenary.

Jack Ryan

A brand new release from Amazon, Jack Ryan, created by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, is based on the fictional character penned by Tom Clancy.

The series stars John Krasinski as Ryan and follows the titular CIA analyst as he is wrenched from the security of his desk job into the field, after discovering a string of dubious bank transfers. His search for answers leads him across Europe and the Middle East, uncovering a growing terrorist threat bent on carrying out an attack on the United States.

The series was renewed for a second season four months before the premiere, so it’s shaping up to be a good watch.

Agatha Christie

After the brilliant A Very English Scandal was released on Amazon earlier this year, the site is treating us to another British drama in the form of Agatha Christie's Ordeal by Innocence, a three-part mystery constructed from one of the iconic crime writer's later works.

Focusing on the Argylls – a stereotypically wealthy and completely dysfunctional family – the plot surrounds the murder of an affluent woman, played by Anna Chancellor, which prompts the arrest and conviction of one of her adopted sons.

Eighteen months later, an alibi for the son shows up and throws the whole situation into disarray. Not unlike an intense game of Cluedo, this development turns everybody in the house into a suspect, with an impressive array of potential motives.

Deadpool 2

Fans of Marvel’s favourite Merc with a Mouth will be pleased to know that Deadpool 2 is available to stream from this month. Building on the 2016 film Deadpool, the sequel brings just as many laughs as its predecessor and an incredible soundtrack ranging from Skrillex to Celine Dion.

Deadpool 2 follows the unhinged anti-hero as he forms the X-Force team to protect a young mutant from the time-traveling soldier Cable, a Marvel favourite finally making his way onto the big screen in the form of Josh Brolin.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

One of the best movies released last year, this drama stars Frances McDormand as a mother who rents three billboards to call attention to her daughter's unsolved murder. Directed by Martin McDonagh, the plot was inspired by real billboards he had seen whilst travelling around America twenty years ago.

Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, John Hawkes and Peter Dinklage all appear in the film as supporting roles, so it’s worth a watch based on the cast alone.
