What to watch on Amazon Prime

3

If you’re looking for some inspiration on what to watch, we’ve rounded up some of the best new offerings from Amazon Prime.

Dietland

Co-starring The Good Wife’s Julianna Margulies and based on Sarai Walker’s 2015 novel of the same name, this darkly comic drama focuses on the life of Plum Kettle, a ghost writer for the editor of one of New York’s biggest fashion magazines.

Expect a scathing, contemporary slant on the whole Devil Wears Prada concept, with themes revolving around misogyny, self-image and the superficial side of the media world.

Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut Lady Bird was one of the most talked about films last year, and for good reason.

Starring Irish treasure Saoirse Ronan as the eponymous Lady Bird, this coming-of-age comedy-drama follows the high school senior through her life and a turbulent relationship with her mother in 2002 Sacramento.

Expect a ton of adolescent drama with some heartwarming moments thrown in for good measure.

Preacher

This entertaining, bizarro-fantasy drama about a grizzled, superpowered preacher taking on the forces of darkness with his wild girlfriend and vampire pal is back for a third season.

Following on from season two’s chaotic New Orleans jaunt, Dominic Cooper’s anti-hero gets fresh intrigue in the shape of the old chestnut: “a mysterious figure from his past”. Hellish fun awaits.

The Disaster Artist

If you’re a fan of cult classic The Room (and let’s face it, who isn’t) then you definitely need this one on your watch list.

The Disaster Artist, directed and produced by James Franco, was adapted from a book written by The Room actor Greg Sestero, detailing the troubled development and production of the movie and his relationship with the eccentric director Tommy Wiseau.

Starring James and his brother Dave Franco as Tommy and Greg respectively, this comedy drama was considered one of the top ten films of 2017.

A Very English Scandal

Based on John Preston’s book of the same name, A Very English Scandal follows the story of the highly publicised 1970s Thorpe affair, during which former Liberal Party leader, Jeremy Thorpe, was tried and acquitted of conspiring to murder his alleged former lover, Norman Scott.

Starring Hugh Grant as Thorpe and Ben Whishaw as Scott, the three-part series is full of twists and turns, with a catchy score and incredible acting from all involved.

Space Jam

If you’re looking for some cheesy nostalgia, Amazon have you covered. 1996 sports comedy film Space Jam was made available on the streaming service this month.

Starring top basketball player Michael Jordan and featuring the Looney Tunes cartoon characters, Space Jam presents an alternate history of what happened between Jordan's initial retirement from the NBA in 1993 and his comeback in 1995, in which he is enlisted by Bugs Bunny and his friends to help them win a basketball match against a group of aliens who want to enslave them for their amusement park. As you do.
