What to watch on Netflix in December

Here’s our roundup of the best things to watch on Netflix this month, from festive family treats, to cartoons for adults who enjoy a chuckle.

The Christmas Chronicles

Kurt Russell as Santa? Er… yes please! The Christmas Chronicles is a festive comedy movie that sees a brother and sister accidentally crash the man in red’s sleigh, only to then team up with him to save Christmas.

Full of action, excitement and hilarious gags, watching this lovely film could very well become a new tradition for future Christmases.

Disenchantment

If you’re a fan of The Simpsons and Futurama, you’ll surely love the latest offering from madcap writer-animator Matt Groening.

Set in a fantastical medieval kingdom complete with sickly-sweet elves, inept wizards and a reptilian queen, the narrative follows Princess Bean finding (and often stumbling across) ridiculous adventures that are bound to raise a few laughs.

With an excellent cast that includes Billy West and John DiMaggio (Futurama’s Fry and Bender, respectively) and some very familiar British tones from Noel Fielding and Matt Berry, this is one fairy tale that is definitely for adults only.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Written, directed and produced by the Coen brothers (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men), you know that this is a western anthology film worth watching!

Starring Liam Neeson, James Franco, Tom Waits and many other fantastic actors, the six stories are contained within an old book, giving it a beautiful storytelling element that brings everything to life.

Even if you’re not into westerns, it’s worth giving this a go as it’s getting excellent reviews.

Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

Rudyard Kipling’s beloved hero returns to our screens in a brand new adaptation, which is set for release on Friday 7 December. Directed by Andy Serkis and starring Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch and Cate Blanchett, the movie begins with the upbringing of Mowgli by a pack of wolves in an Indian jungle.

Before long, the human child embarks on adventures with Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther, which come with many tests of strength, wit and courage.

Beautifully made and with a stellar cast, this is a visual feast based on a classic tale.

F is for Family

Created by and starring American comedian Bill Burr, F is for Family most certainly isn’t for the whole family. Filled with adult topics, foul language and ridiculous scenarios, the animated show can be hard-hitting at first (mostly due to it being difficult to sympathise with the characters), but give it a go and chances are you’ll get into it.

Series 3 has just been released but every episode since the very beginning is part of an ongoing narrative, so it’s best to start at series 1 and see what you think.
