How to connect your Xbox to the internet

Written by KCOM Support on 19/12/2023. Posted in Broadband.

This article is to assist you with connecting your Xbox to the internet. There are two main ways to connect an Xbox to the internet.

Connecting an Xbox via a Wired connection

Something to note

When attempting to connect your console to the router, gateway or modem, you need to use a long network cable (This should come with the Xbox, but in case it doesn't, you would require an ethernet cable). Depending on how far away your router is from the console, you may require a longer or shorter ethernet cable.

If you are connecting your Xbox console directly to a modem, follow these steps:

  1. Plug one end of the ethernet cable into your modem
  2. Plug the other end of the network cable into the back of your console.
  3. Turn off the Xbox by holding the power button for 5 Seconds
  4. Turn off the router by the mains switch
  5. After 1 minute, turn the router back on and wait for all the lights to come back on
  6. Turn on the console

Test your network connection on your console

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide
  2. Select Profile & System > Settings > General > Network Settings.
  3. Select Test Network connection
If the connection test has worked, your console will connect to the Xbox network.

Troubleshooting for Xbox wired connection

  • Step 1: Power cycle your console and router
  • Step 2: Check your network cable (ethernet cable)
  • Step 3: Try connecting with a wireless connection
  • Step 4: There may be an issue with your internet provider

Something to note
The issue may lie with KCOM if none of your other devices are connecting to the internet. In this event, we would advise you contact us on 01482 606101. If it's just the console that is not connecting please, contact Microsoft in the first instance.
