It’s National Careers Week – which means the perfect time to meet some of KCOM’s former apprentice engineers as they talk about earning while you’re learning.

Hull-born Ellis Marsters join KCOM in 2022 from Ron Dearing UTC and studied for a Level 2 Telecoms Field Operative qualification. Ellis loves the practical side of his role and believes it’s a great platform to build a rewarding career in engineering on.

  • Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose to do an apprenticeship because I wasn’t keen on going to Uni and thought that I could start myself at the bottom and work my way up to the top. 

  • Why did you choose KCOM?

I chose KCOM because I saw how much they was expanding and wanted be part of the  team in a growing business. 

  • How have you found it so far?

So far, I’ve found the job really good. I’ve learnt a lot of skills and I’m really enjoying it. 

  • What have you enjoyed most about it?

The thing that I enjoy the most is the civils side of my role - like digging the trenches and doing duct repairs. 

  • How have you found KCOM as a place to work?

KCOM’s a great place to work they are very supportive and provide everything I need. 

  • Would you recommend others do the same?

I would recommend this to others because it's a strong way to start an engineering career.  

  • Where do you hope your apprenticeship will take you?

After my apprenticeship I hope to move up in the company – let’s see where it takes me!
